Mercurial March

With the first blooms arriving in our gardens and neighborhoods we are understandably antsy to get our gardens going. A sneaky warm day in February will have us convinced that spring is here, only to be thrown a surprise snow shower in March.

All of this back and forth can make it confusing to know just what we can plant. So here is a quick cheat sheet to put you on solid ground.

Seeds, seed potatoes, onions sets, garlic!

Many “hardy annuals” can be directly sown into the garden in early March. This includes peas, arugula chard, cress, spinach, cilantro, radish, and onion.

Tender annuals will do better under a cloche for a few weeks, these include carrots, parsley, broccoli, lettuce, pac choi, and mustard. Or you can just wait a few weeks for the soil to warm, and for the the chill to leave the air.

It’s important to remember that with cool temperatures, 30s and 40s, seeds germinate slowly! Keep a watch for slugs and protect new plantings.

Yes, you can plant garlic in the spring, February and March specifically. You will have delicious garlic scapes all summer long and smaller, but tasty garlic bulbs to harvest in the fall.

Seed potatoes go out in late March.

Starts from the nursery can go into the garden if we have them outside in the nursery. These plants will be hardened off and ready to go…UNLESS they are in our greenhouse. Then you know they will need protection for a while from cool temps and mercurial March weather.
